Sharps, needles, and syringes should never be placed loose in the trash or recycling. These items can injure sanitation workers, recycling staff, and the public. Do not place loose needles in bags, recycling bins, or household trash containers.
The Iowa Department of Natural Resources recommends placing used sharps in a strong, puncture-resistant container with a secure lid, such as an approved sharps container or a heavy-duty plastic detergent bottle. Clearly label the container before disposal.
Residents should use approved sharps disposal programs or collection locations whenever available. Proper disposal helps protect workers, public health, and the environment.
