PAINTS & STAINS

Paints and stains are accepted at our Household Hazardous Materials (HHM) Collection Center at 2151 Gypsum Hollow Road. If containers are more than half full and still usable, they may be donated to our Swap Shop.

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources considers many paints and stains hazardous due to their chemical content. These products should never be poured down drains, dumped on the ground, or placed in the trash.

Latex paint: Small amounts of latex paint can often be dried out before disposal. You can leave the lid off and let it air dry, or mix in an absorbent material such as kitty litter, sawdust, or paint hardener until the paint is solid. Once completely dry, it can typically be placed in the trash.

Please keep all products in their original, labeled containers whenever possible and avoid mixing different chemicals. Proper disposal helps protect water, air quality, and the environment.
